RE: K-Z INC MXT20 towing question

Towing with a under sized vehicle will drive you nutty. A good head wind can make you crawl along and is unsafe for the others on the road around you. The stress on the trany and engine will shorten the life of your Nissan. If you choose to go ahead with your plan just realize you may want a new tow vehicle after your first big trip. I hit the worse head winds of my life coming out of Colorado into Utah. Have fun with your search.

RE: Bunk Ends closed in Bear areas

We have camped in Yellowstone and they had no issue with us having the tent ends out and food in the trailer. In Yosemite and Sequioa we have stored our food and any thing with scent in Bear containers. In Sequioa a Black Bear broke into the class C camped next to us and left us alone. We have also camped all over the Sierras without having to empty out the rv. If a Bear wants in they will come it no matter what you do.

RE: Towing a 2001 cub 23

You should not exceed 75% of your vehicles towing capability. This includes the weight of the trailer loaded and the vehicles cargo and passenger weights. This is what is considered safe and generally accepted. You will need to do the math.

RE: Trip to Alaska..........?

We live in San Diego Ca and had the same delima. This summer we flew into anchorage and rented a small suv and tent camped/cabins for the 3 weeks. We also have 2 boys 13,15 and they enjoyed the whole trip (no fighting) The Rv rentals were very expensive around 5500 just to drive off the lot for 4 people. We spent $7200. in alaska for all expenses including rental car. Alaska air has a great card to earn mileage and we earned 3 tix and paid $840. for one. We have also driven to Grand Tetons- Yellowstone-Banff- Jasper and home in 2006 it was a wonderful trip and 3 weeks was plenty of time to enjoy all the sights. That trip cost 4500. Towing a trailer with a ram 2500 pick up. You will enjoy either trip.

Can you use a convection oven without shore power or generator? Like a regular oven?

RE: Generator

I am always amazed at how people with loud generators will defend their choice.... based on cost not caring about the racket that they make at a otherwise peaceful campground. Even a Honda run for a long period of time will annoy fellow campers.

RE: Why buy a hybrid?

I have been camping in a hybrid for 7 years and I really love a nice quiet campsite with the sounds of nature while lying in the tent ends. I also love being able to open up the windows and letting in the fresh air or to blow the hot air out dry camping on hot nights. But, that being said if your a light sleeper and I am the noise in some camp sites can drive you crazy. The condensation during the colder weather will require more work and can truly be a hassle if you plan on getting out quick. The space you get for footage of the trailer can't be beat. I think you should consider the pros and cons of each. Good Luck with your search.

RE: Problems with Hybrids?

There are many posts on these topics on the board. You will get condensation when it is colder outside than in. You will have to make sure all is dry before closing up or be prepared to reopen when you get home to continue drying out the fabric. That said condensation can be controlled with solar blankets and fans and It isn't a big deal to reopen and dry the tent ends when you get home from a trip. Pop-ups take alot more work than a hybrid. When buying used keep an eye out for water damage this is the true killer of the rv. Staining or rot or spongy floors ect bad news... Mold on the the tent ends ect... Both Starcraft and Jayco have great reputations... Good luck

RE: New HTT owner

Regarding the Black Tank I would go straight to the GEO method instead of chemicals. Just use 2 cups calgon (water softner) and 1 cup liquid laundry soap to 1 gal. of water. This is so much better than the chemicals and it really makes dumping a lot easier. We have used this method for 4 years and would never go back to the "blue" stuff. I only wish I had known about it sooner. For more info just do a search for the "GEO Method" Enjoy your new camper....

RE: Any Air Conditioning Moisture Issue?

We have never had that particular problem and will run the air all night if needed. I mainly get condensation when it is colder outside than in. I don't crack a window with the air on but, will with the heater. Condensation is always present in the colder weather but, only on the tent not the bedding.

RE: Battery questions for dry camping for 4 days.

Canadian Karebear wrote: Why do folks think that camping is all about sitting in the RV and watching TV? I could do that at home for less!
I don't think enjoying movies while snuggling in the rv in the cold weather is wasted time. The family is still together unlike at home. I find it very interesting how some people are willing to suggest that a tv in the rv means thats all you do or that your wasting money by enjoying a movie together while camping. To each his own is what I say.

RE: Where to camp in Bishop Ca>

I love bishop creek campground just below lake Sabrina. It may actually be called Sabrina. It is on the creek and the fishing is great. My boys 12 & 14 had a blast there. There are many campgrounds on the way up to Sabrina. Your rig should fit and it is first come first serve. No hooks but you can get water from a pump. You'll need a 5 gal container with a spout. Dump at the gas station on the 395 on the south end of town. Mills pond is nice but the sites are quite close together.

RE: Battery questions for dry camping for 4 days.

My family of 4 just finished a week at the beach and I only switched to the 2nd battery on day 5 because I figured why not. any way if you conserve and we do, in warm climates you can go for days. During the winter So Cal style we can last 4 days on 2 batteries using the furnace only to warm the camper up not during the night and watching many movies. We have dry camped for weeks on end moving from campground to campground and charging while towing. We will usually spend up to 4 nights in any given spot. Monitor your families leaving lights and such on and you should be fine.

RE: Any recommendations for Alaska Land and Sea Cruise??

I stayed at the kenai princess lodge this year and it was a very nice. I have heard that the other lodges are nice as well. I haven't cruised with princess but have heard good things. We used norwegian and enjoyed the trip. We car camped for 3 weeks in alaska this summer and Denali was the highlight of our trip. Alaska is just great you can't go wrong.
